Emily Mercer

Emily Mercer is a psychotherapist based in Colchester, Essex, offering both face-to-face and online work. She has over twenty years experience in mental health and psychotherapy, with a particular focus on trauma and related emotional difficulties.

Emily is a psychodynamic psychotherapist and is trained in EMDR, Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT), and Sandplay Therapy.

Her clinical approach is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy and contemporary trauma theory, helping her to explore how past experiences continue to influence feelings, relationships, and ways of coping in the present. This includes attention to how distress may be held and expressed in the body as well as in thoughts and feelings.

Clinical Approach & Services

Emily has worked at the Tavistock Trauma Service since 2020, where she works clinically as a Senior Psychotherapist and also leads the course Complex Trauma: The Tavistock Model (D19). She has substantial experience working with complex trauma and its associated difficulties, including addiction, dissociation, and longstanding relational patterns. She has also worked in a variety of settings, including community agencies, mental health hospitals, the NHS, and private practice in both Canada and the United Kingdom.

Emily offers a range of therapeutic options, including weekly open-ended and time-limited psychotherapy, EMDR, and a structured initial four-session consultation to explore needs and priorities. She aims to provide a safe, respectful, and collaborative therapeutic space where understanding, emotional regulation, and more sustainable ways of relating can evolve.
